STFM Faculty Development Workshop Series:
Workshop I— “Teaching and Learning Skills”

Participants will have an opportunity to acquire basic knowledge and entry-level
skills in presentation and instructional design. Intended for new or entry-level
faculty members, participants will have time to gain knowledge and practice
in planning a unit of instruction and planning and delivering a mini-presentation
during the workshop. During the follow-up debriefing meetings, participants
can share their observations of presentations given during the conference and
apply the concepts learned to their evaluations.

“Leadership, Activism, Mentoring, and Balance: The Future of
the STFM Women’s Network”

Nationally and internationally, women continue to face barriers to career development.
The Women’s Network provides a unique forum for addressing concerns of women in family
medicine education, scholarship, and practice. A full-day meeting will provide the
opportunity for dialogue and discussion in these critical areas: leadership and
activism; mentoring; and work-family balance. Results of the WONCA Women’s
International Survey will also be presented. Structured discussions will lead
into strategic planning for Network projects and WONCA 2004.

Family violence is a major public health problem
affecting individuals throughout the world. The results of interpersonal
violence affect individuals and families of all backgrounds. As primary care
providers, family physicians serve key roles in family violence education and
prevention. Yet, many practitioners still feel uncomfortable addressing family
violence issues with their patients. This preconference will focus on current
practices, curriculum development, and research issues in the area of violence
prevention and education.
