PR6: "How Leaders Turn Dreams Into Reality: Successful Fund-raising in a Changing World"
Jointly sponsored by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Family Medicine Education Consortium

This workshop is intended for those seeking to understand and to master the world of philanthropy. The US philanthropic community donated almost 250 billion dollars to worthy causes in 2004 over and above the large amounts of dollars awarded by federal and state agencies interested in health care. We believe leaders in family medicine have been setting their sights too low. There is need to dream big and to raise the funds to support our vision. This workshop introduces the skills and knowledge needed to plan and implement a fund-raising initiative.

(Additional fee: $450 STFM member; $675 for nonmembers registering only for this preconference)

PR2: STFM Faculty Development Series Workshop VI: Executive Leadership Development for Academic Family Medicine
Stephen Bogdewic, PhD; Elizabeth Baxley, MD; Mark Greenawald, MD; Michael Jeremiah, MD

Academic family medicine represents both a national resource and sacred public trust. The challenge of preserving and advancing family medicine has never been greater, which means that leaders in family medicine are being tested like never before. STFM is offering this preconference for mid-level and senior-level faculty who are seeking to significantly strengthen their leadership skills.

This offering is constructed in three parts to have a more meaningful and lasting impact:

Part 1: Pre-workshop activity. Participants will be asked to complete a self-assessment instrument concerning their leadership practices.

Part 2: A day-long preconference workshop consisting of interactive sessions oriented around the five leadership practices described by Kouzes and Posner in their book, The Leadership Challenge: Model the way; Inspire a shared vision; Challenge the process; Enable others to act; and Encourage the heart. During this time, participants will reflect on their personal leadership style and skills and engage with the facilitators and fellow participants in activities and discussions that will help them grow in their leadership role.

Part 3: Individual Leadership Development Plans. Participants will develop an individual leadership plan that includes: (1) developing a vision for what they hope to accomplish over the coming year; (2) developing concrete goals related to that vision; (3) establishing a relationship with a coach to assist them in achieving their goals and vision; and (4) linking to electronic resources such as an electronic “Leaders Digest” newsletter that will be made available to participants for 1 year following the workshop.
