STFM and Conference on Families and Health Community Service Project 2006
Join the conference program committee and other conference attendees for a fun-filled afternoon of community service at Austin’s Heart House. Heart House, www.hearthouse.org, is a free after-school program dedicated to providing a safe haven and academic support to low-income children and encouraging them to become good citizens.
According to the Heart House mission, to grow up to be healthy and productive citizens, children need critical resources now to build a better future, including:
1. Ongoing relationships with caring adults
2. Safe places with structured activities during non-school hours
3. Health and mental health
4. Marketable skills/competencies acquired through education and youth development
5. Opportunities to give back through community service and civic participation
Conference attendees who sign-up will be hosting the March Birthday Party, a monthly event celebrating birthdays of children who attend the after-school program. The service will include decorating the party room, getting cake, punch, etc. to serve, and staffing the event which will include a series of games and fun activities.
The entire sponsorship of this birthday party will come from conference attendees who agree to participate. For those who have an active “child within” or for those who need to get in better touch with their “child,” we encourage you to join us!
Fee: $20. Please sign up on the conference registration form and you will then be contacted by a member of the conference program committee with more details.
Sculpture Tour of Austin
This tour will offer participants the opportunity become familiar with the life-size sculpture works of Eugenie Kamrath Mygdal, MA, wife of STFM President Bill Mygdal, on public display in Austin.
Participants will also visit and view the collected works of her teacher, Charles Umlauf, at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum of Austin. The tour will be hosted and narrated by Mrs. Mygdal.
1. The Lila B. Etter Alumni Center at the University of Texas (Generations sculpture)
2. The Austin State School for the Retarded (Non Nobis Solum [Not for us Alone] sculpture)
3. The Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for the Blind (Criss Cole sculpture)
4. The Umlauf Sculpture Garden
Roundtrip transportation from the Hyatt and admission fees to the sculpture locations are provided in the tour fee. Signup on the conference registration form.
Because space is limited and a preconference guarantee is required, STFM will not be able to issue refunds for this event. In the event that STFM does not meet a minimum guarantee to conduct the tour, STFM may cancel the event. If the event is canceled, STFM will issue a full refund to tour participants.
Fee: $40. Tour is limited to the first 24 registrants.
