Return to Conference Home Page Wednesday, March 1 Mindfulness In Medicine Mindfulness Meditation is a way to quiet and calm the mind by paying non-judgmental attention to our moment-to-moment experience. Workshop participants will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and its applications, both clinically and for self-care and wellness. This workshop will involve mindfulness practices appropriate to either beginner or experienced meditators, with discussions of the fast-paced medical world and how to help slow it down effectively. The process of modeling mindfulness as well as teaching it will be a prime consideration. Allie Rudolph, LCSW, has been practicing and teaching mindfulness meditation for more than 10 years as a full-time faculty member at the University of Virginia. She has also run a program in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), with training and supervision from Jon Kabat-Zinn, who ran the first MBSR program at the University of Massachusetts. Her work in this area has led to a wealth of experience in MBSR particularly with how to integrate it into a medical setting: teaching MBSR to residents and faculty, bringing it to bear on departmental and institutional processes, engaging administrative support, dealing with financial realities, etc. Learning objectives include: 1) Introduce participants to the direct practice of mindfulness; 2) Discuss clinical and renewal applications of mindfulness; 3) Discuss how mindfulness applies to residency training, especially in patient-doctor relationship; 4) Learn/share others’ experiences by bringing mindfulness to medical settings; 5) Learn pragmatics of introducing this non-medical, non-western practice into western medical consciousness. (Additional Fee: $95; please be sure to check the appropriate box on the registration form.)
