Workshop 1: Basic Computing for
Medical Health Professionals
John Bachman, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
This presentation is about improving your effectiveness on using a computer. It discusses time-saving
techniques and useful methods of incorporating the computer into an office and more importantly into workflow.
It will emphasize tools for improving productivity for clinicians and staff. It will also discuss improving
your personal life. Are you worried about kids going to college? Did you know how to get part of tuition paid
for by others? “No?” Gee, you might want to learn how the computer can make your life more abundant in the
digital age.
Fee: $75 (Includes refreshments and handout materials.)
Workshop 2: Disclosing Unanticipated
Outcomes and Medical Errors
Cindy Barter, M.D., Lehigh Valley Family Practice, Allentown, PA
This session will explore communication techniques that can be used when unanticipated outcomes and
medical errors occur. The discussion will provide us with an understanding of how patients and families
experience adverse outcomes, specifically how expectations are created and met, or in other circumstances,
not met. It will also look at how one must respond to different types of outcomes in appropriate ways to
achieve a constructive resolution.
Fee: $75 (Includes refreshments and handout materials.)
Workshop 3: Patient Education
in the Office Setting: The Basics
Penelope Tippy, M.D., Southern Illinois University, Donald Bosshart, Ed.D., National Center for
Evaluation of Residency Programs, Kent, OH
Designed for participants who want to get started in patient education, this workshop will present methods that
have proven successful for efficient implementation of office-based patient education. Three basic steps will
be covered: assessing patient education needs, developing intervention strategies, and evaluating outcomes.
Participants will develop strategies, share experiences, identify barriers, and solve problems. A hands-on
resource display will feature various patient teaching materials and supplies.
Fee: $75 (Includes refreshments and handout materials.)
