"A New Model of Health Care and How it Relates to Patient Education"
Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, University of California, San Diego
The process of health care is changing dramatically from a dependence on visits to continuous models of care. Patient education is moving almost entirely to Web-based services integrated into care management programs. Prevention and chronic disease management are becoming team based and Web based, and have continuous patient education needs. This presentation will focus on new models of primary care delivery with continuous integrated patient education. With interactive secure electronic health records, patients will actively manage their care with the help of care teams rather than be passive recipients of patient education.
Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, is clinical professor of Family Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He has been active in the redesign of primary care since serving on the IOM Committee on the Quality of Health Care in America from 1998–2001. Dr Scherger has written and presented extensively on quality improvement and redesign, especially related to online communication in health care.

"Am I Hungry? An Innovative Approach to Weight Management"
Michelle May, MD, Medical Director, Am I Hungry? Weight Management Programs, Phoenix, Arizona
As the epidemic of obesity continues, the real key to successful long-term weight management does not lie in a magical (or even logical) combination of diet and exercise. Instead, individuals must develop “normal” eating patterns in response to hunger cues, and learn to meet their other needs in more satisfying ways. This presentation explores the reasons diets so often fail and gives participants an effective approach to help their patients achieve a healthier weight and lifestyle.
Michelle May, MD is the founder and medical director of Am I Hungry?, a multidimensional weight management program. She is the author of Am I Hungry? What To Do When Diets Don’t Work and co-author of “H” is for Healthy ... Weight Management for Kids. Her workshops and presentations provide an innovative, rational approach to weight management that promotes instinctive eating in place of restrictive dieting.
