Faculty Development Series Workshop II: “Research
Skills—Getting Started With the Basics”

This workshop orients novice faculty researchers to
the basics of educational research design, planning,
implementation, and communication. Participants have
an opportunity to refine a research question, determine
the research design most appropriate for this specific
question, ask questions of experienced researchers, and
share ideas for future research.
Workshop Objectives:
¥ Develop a focused educational research question
¥ Discuss research designs that are most appropriate to
educational research questions
¥ Identify available resources to assist in research
¥ planning and implementation
¥ Discuss appropriate tools and methods for managing
data
¥ Describe requirements and appropriate venues to
publish educational research
Registration Fee: $195. Enrollment for this workshop is

This workshop will utilize updated versions of a
CD-ROM resource tool for family medicine educators
who advise medical students and promote family
practice career interest. This resource is designed to
increase knowledge of and enthusiasm for family
medicine. Faculty presenters from multiple schools will:
1) relate factual material about the discipline, 2) teach
strategies for addressing common myths and misconceptions,
and 3) demonstrate uses of the electronic tool for
learners at different levels.
By attending this workshop, participants will
increase their knowledge of family medicine facts,
successes, and future innovations.

“TEACHING AS SERVICE: Rediscovering the Meaning
of Our Work”

Teaching is the foundation of a profession. Maintaining
commitment on the part of skilled medical
educators is one of the most fundamental concerns in
academic medicine. In recent years, the rate of burnout
among academics has become alarmingly high. As
meaning is the antecedent of commitment, attention has
been focused helping faculty to strengthen a personal
sense of meaning in their teaching work. Refocusing on
the meaning of our work represents a radical change in
orientation for most academics. In a scientific milieu,
meaning may be seen as too unquantifiable and subjective
a dimension of experience to be worthy of serious
concern. The past hundred years have moved us away
from such considerations as meaning and mission to a
view of professionalism characterized by competency,
skill acquisition, and technique. As teachers we may
identify more with our expertise than with our purpose,
We may need to reconsider this position to discover the
deep satisfaction that is innate in our work.
Teaching is a work of service. The meaning of
teaching is found in its human dimension and the
quality of its relationships. Using the discovery model
which is the basis of her Healer s Art course and one of
its innovative experiential techniques, Dr Remen will
enable educators to examine the meaning of their service
work, expand their personal goals as teachers, and
deepen their commitment to teaching in a community of
others of like purpose.
