STFM and AAFP invite FMIG faculty advisors to participate in this specially designed workshop designed to help faculty advisors learn strategies to overcome common barriers to success and build on current strengths.

Goals and objectives:

  • Facilitate FMIG strategic planning, in collaboration with the student leader team.
  • Develop programming that attracts students in the preclinical and clinical years.
  • Develop strategies to overcome the three key barriers to having an effective FMIG – financial limitations, interest of students and faculty,timelimitations of faculty and students.
  • Access tools and resources to that support FMIGs and student interest in a career in family medicine.
  • Access FMIG Network with dialogue with other faculty advisors.

1-5 pm – FMIG Faculty Advisor Workshop
5-6 pm – FMIG Faculty Advisor Reception (optional)

Faculty Development Series Workshop V: "Career Development for Clinician Educators"

This hands-on workshop will focus on academic excellence, educational scholarship, and the educator's portfolio (EP). As a result of this half-day workshop, learners will:

  • Understand personal mission statements
  • Know the different categories of educational scholarship
  • Describe an EP and how the EP relates to the CV
  • Begin preparation of an EP that documents their professional accomplishments
  • Receive a binder of materials to assist in development of their EPs,
    as well as a multimedia disk with templates.

($100; Enrollment for this workshop is limited to 25 people.)

Using Electronic Evidence-based Medicine Tools in Teaching Students

This workshop will be hands on and interactive, focused on using electronic resources to teach students evidence-based medicine (EBM). Faculty that use electronic resources to teach EBM in live supervised fashions will share their experience and curricula. They will demonstrate how they use EBM Internet resources and handheld EBM resources in a teaching setting. Demonstrations will include specific products as well as re-enactment of some teaching sessions. Participants will be given temporary use of a wireless laptop computer and handheld computer and asked to practice some of the same skills that students perform. Lastly, participants will be asked to create their own mini curriculum using these tools. STFM's Family Medicine Digital Resources Library (FMDRL) will be used in this session. FMDRL representatives will be available for demonstration and questions.
