Workshop VI: Executive Leadership Development for Academic Family Medicine
Academic family medicine represents both a national resource and sacred public trust. The challenge of preserving and advancing family medicine has never been greater, which means that leaders in family medicine are being tested like never before. In response to these demanding times STFM is offering a newly-developed preconference for mid-level and senior level faculty who are seeking to significantly strengthen their leadership skills.

Objectives:

  • Distinguish the functional differences between management and leadership
  • Describe and use a succinct framework that distills the broad theory and practice of leadership into practical strategies and tools
  • Develop a set of strategies for addressing a specific leadership challenge they are currently facing
  • Use specific principles and tools to establish a consistent emphasis and direction within their respective organizations.

This offering is constructed in three parts to have a more meaningful and lasting impact:

Part 1: Preworkshop activity. Participants will be asked to complete a self-assessment instrument concerning their leadership practices.

Part 2: A day-long preconference workshop consisting of interactive sessions oriented around the five leadership practices described by Kouzes and Posner in their book, The Leadership Challenge: Model the way; Inspire a shared vision; Challenge the process; Enable others to act; and Encourage the heart. During this time, participants will reflect on their personal leadership style and skills and engage with the facilitators and fellow participants in activities and discussions that will help them grow in their leadership role.

Part 3: Individual Leadership Development Plans. Each participant will develop an individual leadership plan that includes: (1) developing a vision for what they hope to accomplish over the coming year; (2) developing concrete goals related to that vision; (3) establishing a relationship with a coach to assist them in achieving their goals and vision; and (4) linking to electronic resources such as an electronic “Leaders Digest” newsletter that will be made available to them for one year following the workshop.
