Objectives
1. Identification of specific faculty competencies necessary to keep up with the evolving nature of faculty roles;

2. Identification of a continuum of faculty types according to competencies in leadership, curriculum development, teaching, research, administration and medical informatics;

3. Development of a menu driven self-assessment tool that identifies competencies which can be used for personal and professional development.

Strategies
1. Define faculty by roles in teaching, administration, research, curriculum development, leadership and medical informatics. Use a consultant panel and the FFI Advisory Committee to finalize list.

2. Finalize competencies in administration, teaching, curriculum development, multicultural (diversity), medical informatics, leadership and health care management, and research.

3. Develop the assessment tool with input from the panel and FFI Advisory Committee. Complete a pilot of the instrument at East Carolina University and University of Pennsylvania and appropriate consultant panel sites.

Outcomes
1. A flexible model that can be used as a tool for organization and individual faculty development and promotion.

2. Descriptions of models/strategies recognizing and rewarding teaching contributions for community-based preceptors.

3. Family medicine faculty competencies will be paired with dissemination methods identified by the Faculty Development Delivery and Dissemination Methods Project (Mark Quirk, EdD) to provide increased access to faculty development opportunities for all family medicine educators.

Participants
1. Panel of Consultants
2. FFI Advisory Committee
3. STFM Group on Faculty Development
