Purpose:
To test proposed accreditation guidelines for family medicine faculty development fellowship programs with a range of different fellowship programs to determine guideline feasibility and relevance.

Methods:
a. Six family medicine faculty development fellowship programs were identified and agreed to participate as test sites. These sites represented three different types of fellowship programs:

  1. part time with local or regional recruitment, teaching skills focus,
  2. part-time with national recruitment, teaching and research focus,
  3. full-time, research-oriented, national recruitment.

b. Each site completes an accreditation application, self-study, and site visit according to proposed guidelines.

c. Data gathered on accreditation process and opinions regarding accreditation.

d. Data collected to be aggregated and presented as a series of recommendations.

Current Status (as of 10/99):

Two sites discontinued their participation in the pilot test, one of which was replaced. Five sites completed their participation in the pilot test.

A draft final project report was submitted to the Faculty Futures Initiative Project Team, Project Officer and Advisory Committee in mid-April and input was received.

Future Plans:

A final report will be presented and discussed at the final Faculty Futures Initiative Advisory Committee meeting in February 2000.
