International Programs

Some parts of the world need help fostering the delivery of health care through the family practice model. To help these nations, the Foundation has established the International Scholarship Program to support participation of an international family medicine educator to the STFM Annual Spring Conference.

This scholarship program provides an opportunity for family physicians/general practitioners from around the world to attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference. For 2008, this scholarship is being made available to family physicians/general practitioners from Central America, South America, or the Caribbean.

The nominee selected will receive an award of up to $3,500 (US dollars) to support travel expenses to attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference April 30 - May 4, 2008 in Baltimore, MD. If feasible, additional time will be spent in the United States visiting family medicine programs and the offices of the American Academy of Family Physicians and STFM in Leawood, Kansas.

There is one award available, and a limit of one nominee per country.

Criteria:

  1. Must be in first five years of first faculty appointment.
  2. Must be fluent in English.
  3. Must have the support of the country's family/general practice organization.
  4. Must have a US sponsor to help coordinate the visit.
  5. Residency trained preferred, but not required.
  6. Must have potential of becoming future leader in family medicine

Individuals who are interested in the program should submit the following to Roger A. Sherwood, CAE, executive director of STFM:

  1. Letter expressing why you wish to receive the award.
  2. Letter of support from your home institution.
  3. Letter of support from your country's family/general practice organization.
  4. Letter of support from US sponsor.
  5. Copy of current curriculum vitae.
