International Medical Graduate
Entering Resident Academy

Doctor TeachingDeveloped for IMGs who have recently matched with a family medicine residency program, this workshop orients participants to the principles of family medicine and other critical communications skills. The program is intended to help participants make a smooth and successful transition from medical school into a family medicine residency program.

It is well known that more than 40% of current family medicine residents are International Medical Graduates (IMGs), and this proportion is increasing. While these physicians bring a wealth of diversity in cross-cultural backgrounds, IMG residents and residency programs both report that some IMGs struggle with adjusting to the US medical system and meeting training requirements due to issues with cultural competency, communication skills, and medical decision-making skills. Many family medicine programs lack the resources to orient residents to the US health care system and prepare them to enter residency.

IMG RegistrationTo address this critical educational gap, STFM has created a training program targeted to the needs of IMGs who want to train as family physicians.

STFM will offer the STFM Entering Resident Academy

Relevant Content Presented by Experienced Faculty: Participants will learn from experienced educators in residency programs who have identified content the applicants must know to begin residency training. These faculty members will give participants the knowledge to feel prepared as they begin their residency training in family medicine. The workshop content is also based on recent surveys of current IMGs and residency program directors regarding what communication skills training is most needed for IMGs to be successful family medicine residents.

Residencies and Residents Benefit: Participants in the Entering Resident Academy will benefit by being exposed to the following information BEFORE they enter residency programs. Entering Resident Academy participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the principles of family medicine
  • Learn general expectations of residents in a family medicine residency program
  • Become familiar with the essentials of graduate medical education in the United States
  • Gain a sense of the components of the US health care system
  • Discuss issues for dealing with diverse patient populations
  • Learn the essentials of interacting with people (eg, patients and faculty) who have a different cultural background
  • Discuss the basics of professionalism
  • Receive specific written and verbal feedback from program faculty that can help participants perform better in their residency program.

Who Is Eligible?: Eligible participants for the program include IMGs who have matched with a family medicine residency program and will enter that program in 2008. The class size will be limited to 32 participants. Due to class size limitations, individuals are not eligible for this program if they have not been accepted into a family medicine residency program as a first-year resident beginning July 2008. Registrants will be required to have their residency program director confirm their acceptance into the residency before they are guaranteed a slot in the Academy. Additional information will be provided in the email confirmation sent to all registrants.

Fees: If you register by April 25, the fee for the Entering Resident Academy is $899, which includes some meals, academy materials, networking opportunities, and more. After April 25, the fee is $975. Participants are responsible for their own travel costs.

More Information: Contact Angela Broderick, CAE, STFM, 800-274-2237, ext. 5406, abroderick@stfm.org, with questions about the program.
