Social media outlets are one way to provide current updates and two-way communication with STFM constituents.
Social media tools allow flexible communication among STFM members, the organization, and affiliated groups.
Social media promotes rapid and broad sharing of information and ideas, and promotes open dialogue and discussion.
Staff and representatives must follow organizational rules for traditional media outlets and unique rules associated with social media.
The purpose of this policy is to establish baseline rules for using social media outlets for those working for and representing STFM.
This policy applies to staff and active governance members who identify themselves as being a part of STFM and use its branding in public.
Social networks are defined as any Web site that allows individuals or organizations to communicate in a direct or indirect fashion.
Examples include but are not limited to Blogger, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Ning, YouTube and WordPress.
Violations of the STFM social media policy may lead to:
The removal of the group’s presence on one or more social networking sites.
The removal of an individual’s ability to administer one or more social networking sites.
Only STFM staff or authorized users are allowed to create, operate, monitor, edit and maintain social media content on behalf of STFM
Any STFM group engaging in social media must provide the Director of Publications and Community with the type of social media and its Web location.
The name and contact information for individual(s) authorized to create, operate, monitor, and edit content will be given to STFM regularly.
The Director of Publications and Community will be notified as soon as possible if the authorized individual changes.
For Facebook: The Director of Publications and Community must be included as an additional page administrator. This allows STFM to respond more quickly in the event of a problem.
For YouTube: YouTube is the preferred platform for hosting official digital video, and STFM maintains an YouTube Channel
Other platforms: The information to access the content (e.g. username, password, URL) will be provided to the Director of Publications and Community
This allows STFM to respond more quickly in the event of a problem, such as the unavailability or departure of the group member (s)
Social media must comply with STFM visual identity guidelines. Note that use of STFM logos and graphics, must comply with the STFM's Licensing Policy.
1. Do not post content that might be embarrassing to an individual or might reflect negatively on individual or STFM.
2. Do not post content unless it furthers STFM’s teaching, research, policy, and service missions.
3. Share only information that is appropriate for the general public and suitable for all ages.
4. Do not post detailed policy or procedure information for STFM
5. Do not upload, post, transmit, share, store, or otherwise make publicly available:
personally identifiable information, including information relating to STFM, unless you have permission from person being identified
content that could create a security risk for STFM
content depicting a dangerous activity
content depicting someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated, or which might be considered discriminatory, racist, bigoted, or demeaning
content that might cause someone to believe that their name, image, or other identifying of his/her identity is used for commercial purposes
copyrighted pictures or photos without written permission
STFM will not use social media sites to collect personal information about users.
Facebook presences established by STFM entity must be created as ”fan pages.”
STFM encourages its component working groups to establish pages to facilitate discussion among group members.
STFM Director of Publications and Community must maintain the security of the pages’ password and identification.
These individuals are fully responsible for all use of the account and any actions that take place using the account.

STFM encourages its component working groups to establish Twitter accounts to facilitate discussion among group members.
Social media sites generally accept complaints regarding abuse and other issues (eg harassing messages).
Problems or concerns regarding the use of social media or a STFM social media site should be reported to Director of Publications and Community.
Social media account managers should address abuse or harassing messages on STFM social media accounts.
Requests for exemptions to any of the above rules must be made to the Director of Publications and Community.
