2019 Health Equity Awareness Campaign

Throughout 2019, STFM will be turning a spotlight on health equity. Following is an overview of the planned activities and resources:

All 2019 STFM Conferences will have a health equity theme/emphasis, with sessions on health equity topics.

STFM Conference on Medical Student Education

  • General sessions on health disparities/equity and microaggressions
  • Resident-led workshops on leveraging learners to drive social mission and health equity curriculum development
  • Scholarships for URM to attend

STFM Annual Spring Conference

  • General sessions on allyship and the moral obligations of citizenship
  • Preconference workshop on equity and diversity in the workforce
  • Presentation on health equity leadership at the fellowship alumni breakfast
  • Scholarships for URM to attend

AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students

  • STFM-led presentation on health equity

Conference on Practice Improvement

  • Preconference workshop for coordinators on social determinants of health


  • Dedicated issue of Family Medicine on the effect of race and ethnicity, implicit bias, and discrimination on health care
  • Blog posts from programs/departments that have addressed health equity in their curriculum and communities
  • Education column on teaching health equity
  • President's columns in Family Medicine on health equity, inclusiveness, and serious mental illness

Resources and Online Training

  • Webinar on teaching residents and students about health equity
  • Collaboration with AAFP and FMAHealth to disseminate a business case for health equity
  • Curation of existing health equity resources

Professional Relationships

  • Engagement with other organizations to share information and disseminate health equity resources

Other Activities

  • Promote health equity resources via social media
  • Continue fundraising campaign for underrepresented in medicine students, residents, and faculty
  • Continue implicit bias discussions with STFM Board of Directors
  • Discuss health equity as part of strategic planning process
