Anya's Family Medicine Story

My name is Anya Gupta, and I am from the Philadelphia area. I attended Boston University and spent my gap year as a clinical assistant at an allergy and GI practice. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I helped manage the civil surgeon program, conducting medical examinations for green card applicants. This role was my favorite because it allowed me to interact with patients from all over the world and assist with their immigration process, much like someone did for my parents years ago.

Throughout high school and college, I felt most inspired when teaching and mentoring as I could empower others through knowledge. I am thus interested in academic medicine and training the next generation of physicians. Coming from a family without physicians, I constantly seek strong mentorship and guidance. There are many barriers to applying and attending medical school, so I hope to be an approachable source of support and remind my future students that they belong here.

Growing up on the East Coast and living in cities including Boston and Washington, D.C., I have witnessed the impact of health disparities, low health literacy, and distrust of the medical field on underserved communities. I would like to practice in an urban area to address these issues and provide individualized, culturally appropriate care. I am particularly passionate about serving my LGBTQ+ community, immigrant populations, and women. By participating in the 2025 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, I hope to connect with mentors who can provide insight into navigating my path toward achieving these goals. While I know the populations I want to work with, I remain open to the journey of how I get there.

When I'm not studying, I can often be found at a house music concert or the orchestra. I enjoy attending unique events at museums and embassies in Washington, D.C., and I love to travel and am grateful that STFM has brought me to a new place to learn from and grow with others.
