Leadership through Scholarship Fellowship

Earn a certificate of distinction in CBME coaching. This time-limited training will engage two sequential cohorts (May 2027–March 2028 and May 2028–March 2029) of residency faculty for virtual and in-person training and mentoring that integrates performance-based and developmental coaching principles for family medicine educators. The initiative will use a train-the-trainer approach to strengthen coaching capacity in family medicine. The expectation is that participants will model and disseminate coaching knowledge and skills within their own institutions and across the STFM community.

In-person AN27 CBME Coaching Initiative full-day preconference workshop for cohort one

June 2027 – March 2028

Monthly mentor-coaching sessions (10 total) co-facilitated by one performance and one developmental coach
Five supervisory peer sessions led by developmental coaches
Five 1:1 peer-coaching sessions (alternating with supervisory months)
Self-reflective exercise with SMART goal
Submission of a coaching encounter for review and feedback at the end
Virtual meeting of all participant
Post-program knowledge assessment.

May 2028

Certificates awarded at AN28 for the advanced certificate participants who’ve completed their requirements (certificates mailed to those not in attendance).

During or immediately following program:

Dissemination of learned principles through attestation of role in live and/or virtual faculty training through local and national workshops and presentations, or other scholarly activities that contribute to expanding the coaching capacity of family medicine faculty

The timeline repeats through May 2029 for cohort two.

StrengthsFinders® Leadership Workshop
Regular Zoom meetings on topics led by scholar mentors (promotion and tenure, minority tax, manuscript writing, and more). Calls typically occur on the fourth Thursday of the month from 5–6:30 pm central/6–7:30 pm eastern:
- July, August, and September: The fourth Thursday of the months
- October: No call (in-person workshop)
- November: Second Thursday of the month
- December: No call
- January and February: The fourth Thursday of the months
- March: No call (in-person workshop)
- April: Second Thursday of the month

In-Person Meetings:

First Thursday and Friday in October: 2-day workshop, Leawood, KS
First Monday and Tuesday in March: 2-day workshop, Leawood, KS
Attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference

Registration Cost:

The registration fee for fellows is $1200 which includes the two in-person workshops and registration for the STFM Annual Spring Conference. Participants are responsible for paying travel expenses.

Applicants must:

Have a current STFM membership (if you're not a member and you're interested in the fellowship, you can join STFM online)
Document accomplishment in health disparities, social justice, or similar work with plans to continue related work after the fellowship
Demonstrate resilience through obstacles/hardships to reach current level in career
Be a faculty member at associate professor, assistant professor, or instructor rank, with 2–10 years at your current level preferred
Commit to attend monthly Zoom meetings and attend in-person meetings (all listed under the schedule tab)
