June 1, 2026—Family medicine residents and medical students interested in family medicine are invited to apply for the student and resident representative positions on the STFM Board of Directors. These positions are for students and residents interested in developing leadership skills.You must apply through the American Academy of Family Physicians website using the online forms.Student and resident representatives serve a 1-year term (August 1, 2026–July 31, 2027) and may be eligible for a second term. Position Responsibilities
Student Representative Responsibilities
- Engage in discussions to inform decisions made by the STFM Board of Directors (does not represent the AAFP)
- Serve as a member, with voting rights, on the STFM Board of Directors
- Serve as a member, with voting rights, on the STFM Medical Student Education Committee
- Serve as an ambassador for work to engage medical students in STFM activities and academic family medicine
- Attend all STFM Board meetings and Medical Student Education Committee meetings during term as representative
Resident Representative Responsibilities
- Engage in discussions to inform decisions made by the STFM Board of Directors (does not represent the AAFP)
- Serve as a voting member of the STFM Board of Directors
- Participate as a voting member of the STFM Graduate Student Education Committee
- Serve as an ambassador for work to engage family medicine residents in STFM activities and academic family medicine
- Attend all STFM Board meetings and Graduate Medical Education Committee meetings during term as representative

Eligibility Criteria
Resident Representative Eligibility
- Demonstrated interest and involvement in family medicine interest groups, medical school or state organizations as a student or resident
- Must have residency director's endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings
- Must be a member of STFM or willing to join STFM immediately after being elected resident representative
Time commitment away from residency: Moderate to substantial (meetings, communication), approximately 10–15 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings
Student Representative Eligibility
- Demonstrated interest and involvement in family medicine interest groups, medical school, or state organizations as a student
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be an STFM member or willing to join STFM immediately after being elected student representative
