Resources for Family Medicine Residency Recruitment
STFM compiled several resources to help family medicine residency programs recruit and interview medical students, and resources to help medical students position themselves as strong candidates for their preferred choice of residency program for match.
AAFP Residency Selection Improvement Initiative
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) published a Residency Selection Improvement Initiative (RSII) to bring together family medicine leaders, residency programs, medical students and national organizations to improve the residency selection and recruitment process. Launched in 2025, the initiative's intent was to address inefficiencies and challenges in the current residency recruitment and selection process, plus fill all family medicine residency positions in the most effective, efficient and economical way possible.
Four Focus Areas
The initiative features four priorities designed to improve the residency selection experience for both applicants and residency programs:
- Create a one-stop information tool
- Re-imagine the interview process
- Improve residency selection and Match for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and multi-specialty applicants
- Support family medicine-dedicated applicants
