Family Medicine AI Centers of Excellence Recognition Program

The Family Medicine AI Centers of Excellence Recognition Program is designed to support and recognize family medicine organizations that are building meaningful capacity in AI. Applications for the program are currently closed and will open in September 2026.

Advancing AI in Family Medicine—Together

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping health care, but its value will depend on how thoughtfully, equitably, and responsibly it is implemented in real-world care settings. The Family Medicine AI Centers of Excellence Recognition Program is designed to support and recognize family medicine organizations that are building meaningful capacity in AI. The goal is not simply to identify leading institutions. It is to raise all boats by creating a developmental pathway, shared expectations, and a national learning network for family medicine organizations at different stages of AI readiness. The program is currently hosted on the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) website while a new independent nonprofit organization is established to serve as the program's long-term organizational home and governing body.

What the Program Includes

Recognition as a Center of Excellence

Organizations may apply for recognition as a Family Medicine AI Center of Excellence. Recognition will be awarded at developmental tier levels to reflect an organization’s current stage of AI maturity. The tiered recognition model is intended to support growth over time. Organizations do not need to be “fully mature” AI centers to apply. Instead, the framework is designed to acknowledge progress, identify opportunities for development, and create a pathway for continued advancement.

1-Star: Foundational AI Readiness

Essential structures and safeguards are in place to support safe, credible, and responsible AI use in family medicine.Threshold: Demonstrate 10 of 16 criteria

2-Star: Integrated AI Capability

AI work is coordinated, resourced, and embedded across family medicine functions.Threshold: 10 of 16 criteria 1-star + 12 of 19 2-star criteria

3-Star: Field-Shaping AI Leadership

AI capability is mature, influential, and contributing to advancing responsible AI practices across the field.Threshold: Demonstrate 10 of 16 1-star + 12 of 19 2-star + 6 of 9 3-star criteria

National Collaborative Network

Recognized organizations will also become part of a national collaborative network working to advance AI in primary care. The network will provide opportunities for peer learning, collaboration, mentorship, shared problem-solving, and dissemination of emerging practices. Over time, this community will help accelerate responsible AI implementation across family medicine and strengthen the field’s collective voice in shaping the future of AI in health care.

Create Implementation Pathways

Help organizations move from interest to action by making it easier to adopt, adapt, and operationalize responsible AI in family medicine settings.

Enable Mentorship and Peer Exchange

Shorten learning curves and expand equitable access to practical expertise across organizations at different stages of AI maturity.

How to Apply for the Family Medicine AI Centers of Excellence Recognition Program

Applications are expected to open in September 2026.At that time, interested organizations will be invited to submit an application describing their current AI-related activities, infrastructure, partnerships, and more across the recognition framework domains.

Why Apply?

Recognition gives family medicine leaders a practical way to assess, strengthen, and communicate their organization’s AI capabilities. By applying your organization can:

  • Benchmark its current capabilities against a national framework developed specifically for family medicine
  • Identify priority gaps and next steps to guide strategy, investment, and organizational development
  • Gain credible external recognition for responsible leadership and progress in AI
  • Strengthen the case for institutional support by providing a clear framework for communicating needs, accomplishments, and future priorities
  • Join a national network of peers for shared learning, collaboration, mentorship, and multisite opportunities
  • Shape the future of AI in family medicine and ensure that the field’s values are represented as AI continues to evolve

The program is designed to create value regardless of an organization’s current level of maturity. Applicants do not need to have every capability in place; the recognition process provides a structured pathway for understanding where you are now and what to build next.

Recognition Criteria and Tiers

Recognition will be based on a developmental framework organized around core domains of AI excellence in family medicine. The core domains were defined through a national environmental scan led by STFM’s AI Task Force and summarized in an AI Playbook. The framework is designed to assess the degree to which an organization is building the structures, partnerships, safeguards, and learning systems needed to use AI responsibly and effectively.Applicants will be reviewed against tiered criteria and thresholds. These tiers reflect different stages of development and maturity.Download a .pdf of the criteria and tiers or view images below.

Tips for Using STFM's AI Assistant

STFM's AI Assistant is designed to help you find information and answers about Family Medicine education. While it's a powerful tool, getting the best results depends on how you phrase your questions. Here's how to make the most of your interactions:

1. Avoid Ambiguous Language

Be Clear and Specific: Use precise terms and avoid vague words like "it" or "that" without clear references.

Example:

Instead of: "Can you help me with that?"
Try: "Can you help me update our Family Medicine clerkship curriculum?"
Why this is important: Ambiguous language can confuse the AI, leading to irrelevant or unclear responses. Clear references help the chatbot understand exactly what you're asking.

2. Use Specific Terms

Identify the Subject Clearly: Clearly state the subject or area you need information about.

Example:

Instead of: "What resources does STFM provide?"
Try: "I'm a new program coordinator for a Family Medicine clerkship. What STFM resources are available to help me design or update clerkship curricula?"
Why this is better: Providing details about your role ("program coordinator") and your goal ("design or update clerkship curricula") gives the chatbot enough context to offer more targeted information.

3. Don't Assume the AI Knows Everything

Provide Necessary Details:The STFM AI Assistant has been trained on STFM's business and resources. The AI can only use the information you provide or that it has been trained on.

Example:

Instead of: "How can I improve my program?"
Try: "As a program coordinator for a Family Medicine clerkship, what resources does STFM provide to help me improve student engagement and learning outcomes?"
Why this is important: Including relevant details helps the AI understand your specific situation, leading to more accurate and useful responses.

4. Reset if You Change Topics

Clear Chat History When Switching Topics:

If you move to a completely new topic and the chatbot doesn't recognize the change, click the Clear Chat History button and restate your question.
Note: Clearing your chat history removes all previous context from the chatbot's memory.
Why this is important: Resetting ensures the AI does not carry over irrelevant information, which could lead to confusion or inaccurate answers.

5. Provide Enough Context

Include Background Information: The more context you provide, the better the chatbot can understand and respond to your question.

Example:

Instead of: "What are the best practices?"
Try: "In the context of Family Medicine education, what are the best practices for integrating clinical simulations into the curriculum?"
Why this is important: Specific goals, constraints, or preferences allow the AI to tailor its responses to your unique needs.

6. Ask One Question at a Time

Break Down Complex Queries: If you have multiple questions, ask them separately.

Example:

Instead of: "What are the requirements for faculty development, how do I register for conferences, and what grants are available?"
Try: Start with "What are the faculty development requirements for Family Medicine educators?" Then follow up with your other questions after receiving the response.
Why this is important: This approach ensures each question gets full attention and a complete answer.

Examples of Good vs. Bad Prompts

Bad Prompt

"What type of membership is best for me?"

Why it's bad: The AI Chat Assistant has no information about your background or needs.

Good Prompt

"I'm the chair of the Department of Family Medicine at a major university, and I plan to retire next year. I'd like to stay involved with Family Medicine education. What type of membership is best for me?"

Why it's good: The AI Chat Assistant knows your role, your future plans, and your interest in staying involved, enabling it to provide more relevant advice.

Double Check Important Information

While the AI Chat Assistant is a helpful tool, it can still produce inaccurate or incomplete responses. Always verify critical information with reliable sources or colleagues before taking action.
