Call for Members of a Task Force to Develop Behavioral Health Scope of Practice Recommendations for Family Physicians

Apply by September 17, 2026, to be considered for a task force to develop behavioral health scope of practice recommendations for family physicians.

August 10, 2026—STFM is accepting applications for a task force to develop behavioral health scope of practice recommendations for family physicians. These will define a standard for behavioral health care within the specialty of family medicine that will:

Inform STFM initiatives for behavioral health education
Inform future ACGME program requirements
Inform updates to the AAFP Recommended Curriculum Guidelines for Behavioral Health and Professional Well-Being
Help residency programs create and implement curriculum that allows them to graduate residents who demonstrate competence in behavioral health care
Strengthen behavioral health care provided by family physicians to serve their communities across America

Specifically, the task force will:

Host a Family Physician Behavioral Health Scope of Practice Summit to develop initial consensus on scope of clinical competency for behavioral health in family medicine
Develop and conduct a Delphi Study
Draft recommendations based on the results of the Delphi Study
Open the draft recommendations for comments from members of family medicine organizations
Refine recommendations and request endorsement from the family medicine organizations
Publish and disseminate the Behavioral Health Scope of Practice Recommendations for Family Physicians through publications and presentations
Work with national organizations to update residency programs, curriculum, and competency guidelines

More About the Behavioral Health Scope of Practice Recommendations Task Force

The task force will be chaired by Meredith Williamson, PhD, associate program director at the Texas A&M Family Medicine Residency Program.The success of the task force depends on the inclusion of family physicians and behavioral health residency educators with diversity in residency programs and clinical practices. The task force seeks individuals across levels of leadership and career stages and encourages all members to consider applying.

Task Force Meeting Schedule

Task force members will be expected to attend the following meetings:

Nov 6, 2026: Virtual Task Force meeting: 1–4 pm eastern
February 11-12, 2027: In-Person Task Force meeting
June 10–11, 2027: Family Physician Behavioral Health Scope of Practice Summit followed by a Task Force meeting
September 17, 2027: Virtual Task Force meeting: 1–4 pm eastern
January 13–14, 2028: In-Person Task Force meeting
March 24, 2028: Virtual Task Force meeting: 1–4 pm eastern
June 9, 2028: Virtual Task Force meeting: 1–4 pm eastern

Travel expenses for task force meetings will be paid by STFM. Task force members will be encouraged to contribute to the dissemination of the resources through presentations and publications.

1. Avoid Ambiguous Language

Be Clear and Specific: Use precise terms and avoid vague words like "it" or "that" without clear references.

Example:

Instead of: "Can you help me with that?"

Try: "Can you help me update our Family Medicine clerkship curriculum?"

Why this is important: Ambiguous language can confuse the AI, leading to irrelevant or unclear responses. Clear references help the chatbot understand exactly what you're asking.

2. Use Specific Terms

Identify the Subject Clearly: Clearly state the subject or area you need information about.

Example:

Instead of: "What resources does STFM provide?"

3. Don't Assume the AI Knows Everything

Provide Necessary Details:The STFM AI Assistant has been trained on STFM's business and resources. The AI can only use the information you provide or that it has been trained on.

Example:

Try: "As a program coordinator for a Family Medicine clerkship, what resources does STFM provide to help me improve student engagement and learning outcomes?"

Why this is important: Including relevant details helps the AI understand your specific situation, leading to more accurate and useful responses.

4. Reset if You Change Topics

Clear Chat History When Switching Topics:

If you move to a completely new topic and the chatbot doesn't recognize the change, click the Clear Chat History button and restate your question.

Note: Clearing your chat history removes all previous context from the chatbot's memory.

Why this is important: Resetting ensures the AI does not carry over irrelevant information, which could lead to confusion or inaccurate answers.

5. Provide Enough Context

Include Background Information: The more context you provide, the better the chatbot can understand and respond to your question.

Example:

6. Ask One Question at a Time

Cannot make changes to STFM systems or process transactions
