How can you hit the ground running on your first day when you join an outpatient primary care practice? Read this document prior to beginning your clinical rotations for practical strategies on how to be a valuable addition to your rotation practice.
As a student, you may be eager to have a great educational experience but sometimes it is hard to know where to start and how best to pitch in. Additionally, work in primary care is fundamentally different from working in an inpatient setting, and it will be important for you to understand these differences. Review the tips and strategies in this document so that you can become a valuable member of the team, improve the quality of care for your patients, and gain critical experience during your rotation.

Student Onboarding Modules
These three online training modules for students are designed to provide practical skills that will benefit you during your clinical rotations. Each module will take approximately 20-25 minutes to complete, and can be accessed and reviewed at any time. They do not need to be completed in any particular order.
Click on the title of each module to begin. After completing each module, you will be able to download a certificate of completion for that module.

Student Onboarding Passport for Clinical Training Sites
This document will provide your preceptor with basic information about your training, screenings, previous clinical rotations, and objectives for the current clinical rotation.
- Create an account to fill out the online Student Onboarding Passport for Clinical Training Sites. You will need the following information:
- A current photo
- Basic personal contact information
- Emergency contact information
- Details about your school, this rotation, and your personal learning objectives for this rotation
- A 1-2 paragraph bio about your educational background and relevant work & health care experiences
- A list of the clinical rotations you've already completed
- A list of the procedures that you've been trained on and are comfortable performing in a clinical setting
- Attestation that you have completed the three online training modules and read the "How to Be Awesome in an Ambulatory Clinical Rotation" PDF.
- Download your completed Student Onboarding Passport as a PDF and the Word Document "Confirmation of Readiness for Clinical Work" from the Student Onboarding Passport site.
- Email both of these documents to your clinical rotation coordinator or administrator, and ask your coordinator to complete the "Confirmation of Readiness for Clinical Work" letter with your information.
- After both documents are complete, your coordinator will be ready to email both components of the passport to the preceptor or administrator at your clinical rotation site.
Confirmation of Readiness for Clinical Work Letter
This letter needs to be completed by the administration at your school. It verifies that you are ready for clinical work. It includes a checklist to confirm that you have completed necessary trainings such as HIPPA and blood-borne pathogens, that you have up-to-date immunizations and other health screenings, and that your school maintains current health and liability insurance for you. After filling it out with your information, your administrator will share the letter with your clinical rotation site.

About Your Online Passport Account: The Student Onboarding Passport site will automatically save all of your information entered in the form under your user account. You will be able to start entering information, log out, and log back in at a later time to complete the passport. You will also be able to update the passport at a future date for a new clinical rotation. However, your user account will be deleted 3 years after its creation.
