April 3, 2025—STFM is announcing the winners of the 2025 Poetry & Prose Contest. The three submission categories are: poetry; prose; and other short writing.
Poetry
- 1st Place: "From One Who Understands" by Andreise Souza, MD, Beaumont Health
- 2nd Place: "January" by Magnolia Larson, DO, University of Wisconsin
- Honorable Mention: "FQHC Meeting" by Zoë Onion, MD, University of Massachusetts
Prose
- 1st Place: "The Space Between Life and Living" by Andreise Souza, MD, Beaumont Health
- 2nd Place: "Cribbage, Cowboy Hats, and Human Connection" by Maria DelPico, medical student, University of Massachusetts
- Honorable Mention: "My Faith Deconstruction" by Jennifer Cavin, MD, University of Texas
Other Winners
- 1st Place: "Undocumented" by Sarah Stumbar, MD, MPH, Florida International University
More About the Poetry & Prose Contest
Winning pieces will be on display at the 2025 STFM Annual Spring Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, from May 3–7. Awardees will have the opportunity to read their works at the Annual Poetry and Prose Reading. A congratulatory letter will be sent to their program director, chair, and/or dean.
Entries were limited to one per category per person. The three submission categories are:
- Prose—Could be in the form of a story, narrative, or essay and should be limited to 1000 words
- Poetry—Could be in any form
- Other Short Writing—Could include 55-word stories, haiku, 7-word stories, or cartoons with captions
First and second place are awarded for each category. The first and second place prizes in each category receive $50 each.
